ADULT KEELBOAT SCHOOL (age 17+) ( Click Here for Application )

The Adult Keelboat School will provide an introduction to sailing for mature students using keelboats provided by members of Cobourg Yacht Club. Instructors will be the boat owners who have many years of sailing and racing experience. The course will be run over a 4 week period commencing June 1 and ending June 25 with a graduation party at the yacht club. There will be two evenings of instruction each week with the emphasis for on the water instruction – classroom instruction will be conducted during inclement weather. Participants will

  • Gain a basic knowledge of boat and sailing terminology;
  • Gain an understanding of the principals of sail power;
  • Gain the ability to tie nautical knots and know when to use them;
  • Gain a knowledge of boat safety and man overboard procedures;
  • Gain the ability to understand wind speed and the weather;
  • Act as a helmsman while beating, reaching, running, tacking, gybing and bearing up using proper commands;
  • Learn the basics of hoisting and lowering sails on a keelboat and understanding proper sail trim;
  • Understand how to bring a vessel into a dock under power.

 

Fees for the course are $350 per person – included in this fee is an Associate Membership into the club for the remainder of the year (a value of $190). Fees for Members will be $160 per person.
