The adult Dinghy School course provides an introduction to sailing for mature students with instruction to a proficiency equivalent to the White Sail II level. The course will be offered three times during the summer with each session running over 6 evenings (1800 to 2100) during a two week session. A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course. Participants will- Gain a basic knowledge of boat and sailing terminology;
- Gain ability to tie nautical knots;
- Have the ability to describe the wave conditions and beaufort scale resulting from various wind strengths;
- Act as a helmsman while getting underway from, and returning to, a dock, mooring or beach;
- Act as a helmsman while beating, reaching, running, tacking, gybing, bearing away and heading up using proper commands;
- Stop a boat at a predetermined point by luffing up (as in approaching a mooring);
- As skipper and crew, right a turtled boat.
Fees for each session are for members – single $180, couple $278; Non-Members – single $200, couple $310. Note that on completion of the course, graduates will be issued an Associate Membership in the club for the remainder of the season. People will be encouraged to build on their sailing skills as part of the centerboard fleet.
STANDARDS
CYC Instructors are trained and certified by the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA). Instructors teach using the CYC curricula which is the standard across Canada. It includes a progression of skills and knowledge both ashore and afloat. The CYC ratio of students to instructors is maintained.
WHAT STUDENTS NEED
- Government approved and fitting life jacket (PFD)
- Change of clothes
- Sunscreen and a hat
- Sunglasses (with strap to prevent loss)
- Drinking water in a non-breakable container
- Clearly label everything and leave valuables at home.
